Workshop on Practical Insights Into IFRS 15 & 16

Practical Insights on IFRS 15: Revenue from Contracts with Customers

The objective of IFRS 15 is to establish the principles that an entity shall apply to report useful information to users of financial statements about the nature, amount, timing, and uncertainty of revenue and cash flows arising from a contract with a customer. Remember “a customer” here. If you have a contract with a party other than a customer, then IFRS 15 does not apply.

IFRS 15 applies to contracts to deliver goods or services to a customer. A 'customer' is a party that has contracted with an entity to obtain goods or services that are an output of the entity's ordinary activities.

Practical Insights on IFRS 16: Leases

In January 2016, the new standard about lease accounting IFRS 16 was issued and it introduced a few major changes. The most significant are:

  • New definition of the lease can cause that some contracts previously treated as “service contracts” can now be treated as “lease contracts”,
  • Accounting for leases in the lessee’s financial statements changed and lessees do not classify the lease anymore. Instead, they should account for all the leases in the same way.

The objective of the standard IFRS 16 is to specify the rules for recognition, measurement, presentation and disclosure of leases.
